Meet the Missions

"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb." Psalm 139:13

What does Mother’s Day have to do with English District mission work?

In addition to supporting churches and church workers in the English District, we also provide mission support. Mother’s Day weekend seemed to be the perfect time to kick-off our new “Meet the Missions” series, introducing programs that the district supports. Each year, representatives of various missions apply for grants to help fulfill the work they do – everything from campus ministries to urban assistance to pregnancy assistance.

Because, as a district, we honor life, we are committed to the women and families who need our help. Several of our churches help local pregnancy centers by stocking shelves with diapers, wipes, clothing, car seats and more.

Redeemer Crisis Center, located on the near west side of Cleveland, OH, is one of many missions we support. It offers a food bank, serving 500+ neighborhood families. In the past three years, the Center has tried to put an emphasis on educational programs for their neighbors. Diane Zellmer of Redeemer Crisis Center supplied us with this information to share:

“One of the new ministries is Babies’ Care Cupboard.  Once a month, a knowledgeable speaker is scheduled for pregnant parents and parents of children up to the age of two.  Topics covered include: home safety for babies and toddlers; lead poisoning in homes; Baptism; SIDS; the importance of reading to babies; nutrition; and postpartum depression. Since the group is multi-cultural and multi-ethnic, a Spanish translator is provided.

Parents who attend receive 25 diapers, a package of wipes and the opportunity to “shop” for new/gently used baby clothes, used pack-n-plays, strollers, cribs and other items as available.  Attendance has grown from 5-7 families represented to 18-20 families per month. Help with the cost of a new car seat or stroller for a family would be greatly welcomed.  Redeemer has been blessed to be a blessing.

Wendy – a regular attendee of the Babies’ Care Cupboard – and her husband have five children, including a nine-month old. Recently Wendy’s sister was incarcerated, and two more children were added to their family. ‘The information I get here is so good in helping me cope and in being a better parent.  And the diapers and wipes are truly a blessing!  My husband has a job, but some months we just can’t afford diapers for two children.  Thank you, Redeemer, for caring about us!’”
