                       A Dollar for Missions

was launched on June 15, 2018

Follow 1-1-1 in Servant to Servant

See what has developed since the onset of 1-1-1

In the beginning…   One dollar, per member, per week = 1-1-1!

The English District is launching a new model for funding missions to which every congregation is invited to participate. It is completely voluntary, but we believe that as God's people see and hear what is being accomplished, specifically and directly in support and development of new missions and enhancing existing missions, more and more of us will want to be involved.

It's simple. Very simple. It is NOT burdensome, nor sacrificial. It involves every baptized member of the Body of Jesus in your congregation, from the newest baby baptized to the oldest member. It demonstrates the power of the beautiful body of Christ working together, prompted by faith. It shows how much can be accomplished by many, giving little.

Here's the plan: $1/per baptized member/per week. Simple, right? Self-explanatory almost. Not burdensome, nor sacrificial. All can participate.

 1-1-1 Bearing Fruit

We would like to thank you

and all the members of the congregations who are supporting the English District Missions and for your participation in 111We are happy to share that the news that as of the beginning of March the District has received $25,437 from 29 of the 55 congregations participating in 1-1-1 and 6 individuals.

This is the power of many giving little as we are moved by Gods spirit

Missions is what the Church is called to do, by Jesus.

Fear can stop us of from dreaming big and doing great things.

We are the body of Christ—working together.

There is power and strength in many giving a little.

The extra funds for missions that are raised will help support two missions.

Young and old alike are making a difference! Won’t you join us?

On Wednesday, July 24, at the 67th Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), there were three resolutions presented by Floor Committee 8 on Finance.

Synod passes Resolution on 1-1-1

One of the three resolutions encouraged LCMS congregations to adopt the 1-1-1 offering model. Thanks be to God, the resolution passed, and the good work of 1-1-1 is now being recognized across Synod!

District Resolution to be Considered by Synod  Congratulations, English District congregations! Your enthusiasm for the 1-1-1 “Dollar for Missions” initiative has not only generated excitement in God’s people in local congregations, and not only raised well over $35,000 for use in God’s mission field throughout our District, but now the ENTIRE Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod will be considering this model for use in mission support at this summer’s Synodical Convention.

If you were at the 2018 English District Convention in Ann Arbor, MI, you saw how encouraging it was to have the delegates join together, voting 93% to 7% in favor of supporting A Dollar for Missions. Since that time, dozens of English District congregations have joined in and given generously by God’s grace. What if all 35 Districts of Synod were united in the same way? As a Convention Resolution to recommend this giving opportunity to all Synodical congregations comes forward, please cover it in your prayers.

Please pray with all of us that congregations from around the LCMS see all of your joy as you give to the mission work of God’s Kingdom. Please pray that if this resolution passes, the voting delegates themselves take home enthusiasm and energy, knowing that there really is power and strength in many giving a little. The mission endeavors of our pastors, teachers, missionaries, mercy workers, and lay people around the world are so, so important. This resolution seeks to affirm its importance, and encourage it like never before, to resource it like never before.

God’s people are a generous people, because they serve an even more generous God. May that same God bless you as you serve HIM with joy!

“ Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good… ”            Psalm 107:1

For the people of Saint Mark Lutheran Church, they know how true those words are as this year they celebrate their 110th anniversary. That’s why it has been such a joy this year to watch them faithfully continue to support the 1-1-1 program like so many of our sister churches throughout our English District. Over these past six months not a Sunday or Thursday night passes without the people putting in their weekly contribution as they leave the Lord’s House. Furthermore, on those rare occasions when the pastor forgets to put the box out (imagine that happening?), never fear, there are enough members asking about its whereabouts.

Called to Serve

I am a member of Lutheran Church of the Prince of Peace, Menomonee Falls, WI, the church that piloted the 1-1-1 initiative.

This giving campaign was the stepping stone of my calling for future deaconess missionary work in foreign countries. Because of 1-1-1, a team of six members from Prince of Peace went to serve our Lord in Hong Kong to teach English to students. It has changed the lives of our members who served in Hong Kong and encourages us and others to step up into missionary work, both domestic and international.

The 1-1-1 initiative provided for my first ever mission trip and I have since gone on another mission trip to Africa. Once you start missionary work you just keep on going with the passion to serve our Lord.   – Liz Jentz

Faith Lutheran Church and School in Watertown, WI

has adopted A Dollar for Missions. We have the plastic container located in the front entrance of both the church and the school. It is also an easy way to get the children participating and teaching them the importance of supporting missions. We have an announcement in the church and school newsletter as well as a sheet near the container explaining the 1-1-1 model.

In the picture, two students are demonstrating that there is power and strength in many giving little.

(High school student Mitch R.)

Peace Lutheran-Windsor's participation in the 1-1-1 program really began with the District Convention in June 2018. After the presentation, our lay delegate, Ron Schertzer, looked at me and said, "We need to do this at Peace!" We showed it at the next church council meeting, and for the most part they were receptive, though a few had their doubts - either thinking that members would not be that interested in participating, or (since our Canadian dollars are in coins) that it was going to be a bunch of extra work for the finance committee to put them in rolls.

On the Sunday we introduced it to the congregation, I incorporated the district video into my sermon. Starting that Sunday (and every Sunday since), we have included some blurb about 1-1-1 in the bulletin, often times coming from one of the FAQs from the district website.

The Lord has truly blessed our members with enthusiasm and a desire to participate in this mission work for the sake of His harvest!                   - Rev. James Leistico

Redeemer Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, IN began 1-1-1 on September 9, 2018. We have requested that every baptized member give $1 extra each week for missions, and there is now a clear plastic donation box in the Narthex for this purpose. The goal is to collect money in this way for one year. Half of the money will go directly to fund the Ritzmans and their work for the LCMS in Papua New Guinea and the other half will go the District where it will help fund one domestic and one foreign mission.

Redeemer has many large families with 4 or more children. The burden of $1 per baptized person every week is not much for most couples or single people, it can add up for those with large families! With this in mind, we are asking those that can afford it to adopt some of the children in the parish for this purpose by getting 50 $1 bills and then giving the money to the adopted child's parents. The adopted child will then be able to donate every week allowing them to participate in 1-1-1 along with their friends and other families. It was suggested that grandparents do the same, assisting their grandchildren in participating in 1-1-1, teaching them the joy of giving and helping to support missions here and abroad.

St. John's Lutheran Church Pembroke, ON Sunday School Children get involved in 1-1-1

Here are some of the children we have in our Sunday School at St John’s Lutheran Church, Pembroke. We chose to promote this mission in September with the children along with the congregation to remind them that they are a part of something much bigger. As we check our level of coins each Sunday, I remind the children how important their contributions are and to imagine all the other church’s like ours that are doing the same thing right now. When all of the coins are put together, great things can happen to help where needed anywhere in the world. We give as Christ has instructed us to “Love each other as brothers and sisters, and honor others more than ourselves” (Romans 12:10) as we learned to sing last month.”

1-1-1 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Pembroke, Ontario, Canada

After our delegates returned from the English District convention the end of June 2018, they came with word of a new initiative within the church: 1-1-1. The idea was presented to the church council and it turned out to be an easy sell. Everyone agreed that it seemed like a win – win – win situation.

Win number one: it presents a way for the congregation to support the mission of the larger church.

Win number two: it is a way for all of the members of the congregation to participate, regardless of economic standing or age.

Win number three it presents a way to keep the mission needs of the church continually before members of the congregation so that we can all be participating in the great commission.

https://files.constantcontact.com/9910abf3501/0f0f0cd9-bf4e-4d3e-9e7d-f7532d8e9e66.png

When we began the program, we showed the promotional video to the entire congregation one Sunday. Immediately there was great enthusiasm for the project.

Seldom is there a new project that is presented that has such widespread support. Later the superintendent of our Sunday school thought that the 1-1-1 program could be part of the Sunday school opening. A member of our congregation, Don Davidson, made a special receptacle for the children to deposit their loonies.

(In Canada we do not have dollar bills and so the receptacle is designed for our dollar coin which we call a loonie.)

It pleases us to be able to be involved in the support of missions. We hope that our story helps inspire your congregation to be part of it as well.

One of the Missions 1-1-1 Supports

Concordia Lutheran Mission exists to share the Good News of Jesus in Lebanon County, PA. We are excited to have been doing that in many ways recently:

On Saturday, January 26th, members from both Mount Calvary, Lititz and Concordia canvassed over one hundred homes in a neighborhood in Myerstown. We told our neighbors about our church and left informational door hangers.

On Saturday, February 2nd, members of Concordia volunteered at Evangelical Seminary’s annual Scholarship Run

in Myerstown. Concordia is blessed to use Evangelical’s chapel for worship.

In addition to volunteering, Concordia had an information booth set up at the run. Both of these opportunities gave us the chance to make many community connections and tell many about our church.

On Sunday, March 3rd, Concordia welcomed Brad as the newest member of our mission! Pictured are Rev. Jim Witt officially receiving Brad into Concordia and then some of our members celebrating Brad’s reception with cake at Bible study.

We welcome Trinity, San Dumas, CA (Circuit 23)

Rev. Matthew Payne

As one of the newest congregations in the English District, we have been truly blessed by our participation in its mission efforts, especially the 1-1-1 giving. Though we are a very small church, all our members have joyfully responded to the effort, especially our young. We are overjoyed in the stewardship catechesis this provides for them and all our people. We may be tiny, but quite a bit has been raised so far. We are so thankful to have this opportunity to contribute to the greater mission of the church. To God be the glory!
