The LWML English District

By Jan H. Simmons, President, English District LWML

The LWML English District just finished their 37th Biennium. LWML can best be described by our mission statement: The mission of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) is to assist each woman of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod in affirming her relationship with the Triune God so that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry to the people of the world.

The main emphasis of the LWML is to encourage women to be in the study of God’s Word and to share its message with people in our lives. As women of the LWML, we feel the importance of being in God’s word, of missions, and of service and fellowship, and we want to share this with other women.

Most LWML Districts are divided into geographical zones. The LWML English District is very unique in that we are non-geographical. We encompass zones from all over the country - Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.  Within the zones are societies, groups of women that meet together in churches, studying the word of God, conducting service projects wherever and whenever there is a need and supporting missions by collecting spare change, which we call mites. The LWML Societies function in different ways: some are very structured with officers, regular meetings and bylaws, while other societies simply have a contact person who receives information about events going on in the LWML and sends the donated mites to our LWML English District Treasurer.

The districts of the LWML meet at convention biannually on even years. At our conventions, we have a Festival Worship service at a local LWML church where the convention is held. This allows women, men and families to participate in the service and experience firsthand how the LWML glorifies God through His word and sacraments. At convention, the women can participate in service projects on location and in the local community. Attendees are offered three sessions of Bible study, mission speaker presentations, and election of officers. Additionally, we vote on grant recipients. These sessions give women the opportunity to hear and study God’s word, provide service for His people and to learn about missions, all while enjoying the Christian fellowship of other women in The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. During our convention in April of 2016, a Mite Goal of $16,000 was approved to support mission grants for our 2016-2018 Biennium.

Mission grants selected for the 2016-2018 Biennium include:

1 - Gospel Hands VBS - Lutheran School for the Deaf, Mill Neck, New York

2 - Catechisms for Sudan & Sudanese Immigrants - LHF, Macomb, Michigan

3 - Operation Barnabas Committee, Calvary Lutheran Church, Mechanicsburg, PA

4 - It’s All About the Kids – Lutheran Special Education Ministries, Farmington Hills, MI

5 - Missionary Work of Deaconess Rachel Powell, Dominican Republic

6 - Grace Community Meals – Grace Lutheran Church, Wyoming, MI

As of this writing, the first four mission projects have been paid. Our next convention for the LWML English District will be held in Grand Rapids, MI, April 25-27, 2018.

If you have a society at your church, I am asking you to personally invite the busy women of your congregation to participate in the LWML. Let them know they are valued; explore what your society can do to make them want to become more active. Visit our website for information about what is happening at the LWML English District and see our mission grant recipients. There is also a link to the national LWML.

The LWML National Convention will be in Albuquerque, New Mexico, June 22-25, 2017. It should be quite an uplifting experience, as it is the 75th anniversary of the LWML. Information about that convention can be found on the LWML websitealong with other resources such as Bible studies, program assistance, missions support, and service projects to participate inplus so much more!

The LWML English District is always looking for a worthy mission to support through our mite offerings. If you have an LCMS mission in your area that you would like the LWML English District to consider, please contact our Vice President of Gospel Outreach, Diana Honebrink, with a grant proposal. Information will be on the website beginning in July 2017.

It is written in Hebrews 10:24-25a, "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another.” The LWML is a perfect way for women in your congregations to get stirred up, love one another, and meet together as our Lord has directed in Hebrews 10. Together all women of the LCMS can share with their sisters in Christ the contagious joy that results from serving our Lord through the LWML!

Do the women in your congregations know about the LWML and the missions and service projects we support? Do you have an LWML Society in your congregation? If you want more information about our LWML English District, please contact Jan Simmons at janlwml@yahoo.com.

Do you have a ministry experience you would like to share? If so, you, too, could be a guest blogger for the English District. For consideration, please send an email to Lynne Cobb, Communications Coordinator for the English District LCMS at lcobb@englishdistrict.org.
